What matters when you buy a light pad
Lit area over board size
Compare the working or illuminated area when the listing gives it. Two "A4" pads can differ by an inch or more of lit space.
Adjustable brightness
Full brightness can make light-colored symbols harder to read, while dim settings help on pale canvases. Three levels is the minimum; stepless dimming is nicer.
Button placement
Touch buttons on the front edge get bumped by wrists. Side or corner buttons, like the TOHETO's, avoid that.
Corded vs rechargeable
USB pads are cheaper and fine at a desk; you can power them from a phone charger or power bank. A built-in battery is worth paying for if you paint on the sofa.
A stand for your neck
Painting flat on a table means hunching. A stand that tilts the pad lets you sit upright for longer sessions.
Light pad or desk lamp?
A daylight desk lamp lights the canvas from above, which helps you see the drills you've placed and their sparkle. A light pad lights the canvas from below, which makes the printed symbols stand out, especially on dark or busy designs. Many regular painters use both: the pad for reading symbols and a lamp for checking finished sections. If you can only buy one, buy the pad, because reading symbols is where beginners lose the most time and strain their eyes.
One tip: if symbols on very pale areas look washed out, turn the pad's brightness down rather than up. Too much light can make faint symbols disappear.
